24 Magazine.BethelCollege.edu IN MEMORY Dr. Louis A. Campbell ’62 , age 79, of Charlotte, N.C., passed away on Feb. 10, 2018. Louis was born on Nov. 6, 1938, in Tuscola County, Mich., to Gertrude and Ernest Campbell. He graduated from Bethel College in 1962 with a B.S. in Theology. He continued his education at Central Michigan University, receiving his M.A. in Counseling. He also studied at Michigan State and Liberty University, where he was awarded his Ph.D. in 1990. He worked as a counselor at Lincoln County Schools until his retirement. He served as deacon at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church for the past 12 years. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cheri and Charles Heilmann of Hutto, Texas; his son, Kevin Campbell of Ellijay, Ga.; his son Jonathan Campbell of Navarre, Fla; three grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. Dr. Lewis Earl Foster ’65 , passed away on Feb. 10, 2018. A 1965 graduate of Bethel College, he also studied at Central Michigan University earning his M.A., Anderson Bible Seminary earning his Ph.D. in Theology (1995) and Ph.D. in Divinity (2006), and Belford University, earning his Ph.D. in Biblical Studies (magna cum laude/2005). He also received an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity in Christian Education from New Wine Ministries in 2000. Earl (as he was known to those close to him) taught and coached at both the high school and collegiate levels in Indiana and Michigan. From 1983-1999 Earl served as pastor at the First Baptist Church of Hudson in Hudson, Fla. Then in 1999 he planted the Faith Community Church in Hudson, now located in Shady Hills, Fla. He was an assistant pastor at New Life Ministries until his passing in February. He was also a part of “His Touch,” a radio ministry that lasted more than 10 years, a biker ministry outreach, and a blog titled “Misfit Preacher.” He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Jane, and their two sons David and Duane. Ruth A. Gates ’67 , age 92, of South Bend, Ind., passed away on March 7, 2018. She was born Jan. 5, 1926, in Bicknell, Ind., to the late Bertalena (Marshall) and Louis Roberts. Ruth graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Bethel College and a master’s degree from Indiana University South Bend. She began her teaching career in the South Bend Community School system teaching first and second grades at Lafayette Elementary and McKinley Elementary for 25 years. In 1945, she married William L. Gates, who preceded her in death in 1996. She is survived by her son, L. William Gates (Sandy) of South Bend; her daughter, Melinda Gates (John Walker) of Indianapolis; and two grandchildren, Alexa and Graham Gates. Deloris Faye Jones ’60 , age 80, of Springfield, Va. (formerly Indianapolis, Ind.) passed away on April 22, 2018. She married David Jones on June 20, 1968, who passed in 2012. Deloris is survived by four step children (Renee Jones-Lugo, Paul Jones, Sheila Neuber, and Tony Jones), two step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren; brother Weldon (Ren) Reynolds of Middlebury, Ind.; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Deloris graduated from Bethel College with a BS in Education (1960) and Butler University, Ind., with an M.S. in Education (1964). She taught fourth grade at Brook Park Elementary School in Lawrence, Ind., for 35 years (1960-95). After retiring as a teacher, she worked as a Certified Nurse Asst. at Westminster Village North in Indianapolis for over five years. She stayed active in the National Education Association and was recognized by the MSD of Lawrence Township with the Distinguished Service Award and by the Outstanding Young Women of America Awards program in the 1972 edition. Deloris was a founding member and long active participant at Providence Missionary Church in Lawrence, Ind., contributing in music, teaching and administration. Naomi (Barcus) Kent ’64 , age 89, of South Bend, Ind., passed away on June 2, 2018. Born Aug. 27, 1928, in Niles, Mich., to Ormond and Violet (Haquist) Barcus, Naomi met Kenneth L. Kent in Springfield, Ohio, where they attended Wittenberg University. They were married Aug. 22, 1948 in South Bend. Kenneth preceded her in death in 1996 after 48 years of marriage. Naomi graduated from Bethel College with a BS in English in 1964. She completed her master’s in Education at Indiana University, South Bend in 1967. Naomi taught English at Jefferson School for many years and retired from Riley High School in 1995, where she served as chair of the English Department. Naomi is survived by two children, Kenneth L. Kent, Jr. (Gail Wimberly) of Granger, Ind., and Judith Kent (Maurizo Furlan) of Chicago, Ill.. 1 IrmaWashmuth Longley ’58 , age 82, of Upland, Ind., passed away suddenly on March 18, 2018. She was born on Sept. 28, 1935, to Rev. Leonard J. and Goldie A. Washmuth. Irma graduated from Vicksburg (Michigan) High School and then attended Bethel College, where she met her future husband Jack C. Longley, a retired Presbyterian minister. Irma received her B.S. in Education. After graduation she taught elementary education in Indiana and Florida. Taking a short break from teaching while her daughters were young, Irma returned to teaching at a pre-school in southern California and then taught for 18 years at Clement Pre-School upon a move to San Jose in 1978. Irma was a gifted artist who was featured in numerous art festivals in Southern California. Also an avid tennis player, Irma played up to five times a week — her last game only three days before her passing. She was a devoted Christian, a member of the Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos, and most recently attending the Taiwanese- American Presbyterian Church in San Jose where Jack was serving as temporary supply pastor. 1
