May Named Chair of Art Department
Michael May, MFA, is providing new leadership to the art department this fall as chair and assistant professor of art. He has a bachelor’s degree from Ball State University and a master’s degree from Miami University. He most recently taught painting, color theory, 2D design, 3D design and drawing at Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus, Ohio. Before becoming a professor, he lived and worked as an artist for four years, working with children with special needs, teens with criminal records and adults with mental illnesses. May exhibits his own work in solo, group and juried national and international exhibitions, and is the recipient of the Ohio Arts Council’s Individual Excellence Award for his outstanding accomplishments in painting. He was twice nominated for the Columbus College of Art & Design’s Teaching Excellence award. He and his wife, Assistant Professor of Biology Cassandra May, Ph.D., have one child.
Franklin to Lead Choral Activities
Alumnus Jeshua Franklin ’04, D.M.A., has been named director of choral activities and assistant professor of music. He has a bachelor’s degree in music performance from Bethel, a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University and recently completed his doctorate in choral conducting at the University of Washington. He spent the last four years teaching at Lincoln Trail College in Illinois, where he chaired the music department, directed choirs, and taught music theory, music appreciation, applied voice and flute. Franklin has been in demand as a conference presenter, speaking at state, regional and national choral and music education conferences. At Bethel, he will direct the Concert Choir and Voices of Triumph, as well as teach applied voice. “Coming back to teach at Bethel is a dream come true for me! I’m honored to be succeeding Bob Ham, as he had a profound influence on me in my years as a student at Bethel,” he says. He and his wife Sara (Zook) ’05 have three children.
