Jana R. McLean, Ph.D.

Janna R. McLean, Ph.D., became the dean of arts and sciences on July 1, replacing Tom Visker, P.E.D., who transitioned to a new role as Bethel’s athletic director. “Dr. McLean is a wonderful fit for Bethel College,” says Barb Bellefeuille, Ed.D., vice president for academic services. “She has extensive experience in higher education leadership and combines her academic qualifications with her desire to mentor students and faculty. Her outlook on life is relaxed and fun, but she is serious about the blending of faith and learning in college life.”

Throughout McLean’s career, she has been a contributor to the advancement of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education and has been involved with the Association of American Colleges and Universities’ Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL) since 1996.

McLean is active in researching Drosophila melanogaster, commonly known as the fruit fly, and is a frequent presenter at Drosophila genetics research conferences. She will continue her research at Bethel, involving students and using it as a way to mentor them and prepare them for the future.

“I’m excited about the opportunities at Bethel,” says McLean. “I feel like my gifts fit the needs of the college and I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get working as part of the Bethel community.”
She and her husband, John, have two grown sons.
