Bethel University Community Impact Report

Community Impact Report | 6 BethelUniversity.edu BETHEL UNIVERSITY For Addison Leiler, a junior biochemistry major, receiving the Nelson Endowed Scholarship has made higher education possible. “I’m actually able to be here because of the scholarship. This semester my family’s been going through a lot of weird financial stuff, so money’s just not around, basically. We still have some we have to pay for the tuition but it’s feasible and before, it wasn’t,” he explains. Having previously taken courses at DePaul University and Ivy Tech, Leiler transferred to Bethel last semester. So far, his experience has been really positive, especially with his peers and professors. “Everyone’s willing to help out,” he says, adding that professors really take time to meet with students. Leiler will soon decide whether he wants to pursue the medical field or research. He acknowledges that these opportunities are open to him because of his scholarship. Sophomore psychology major Asia Hudson has experienced financial worries as well. “Money is a hard thing to provide for a college student ... You’re juggling so much and it’s adding on stress. [A scholarship] just kind of lowers that stress for you,” she says. Hudson notes that, for her, the Dwyer Scholarship came at just the right time. “It was the end of the year and I was struggling to pay. I kept going to Financial Aid and all of a sudden this happened, kind of like a miracle.” Hudson is grateful that she can continue her Bethel education. Her professors have been “hands-on” and “easy to talk to,” and she has grown spiritually in a way that she’s never experienced before. “I came in not knowing anything [about the Bible] and I learned a ton,” she says. After graduating, Hudson wants to pursue graduate school for either criminal or clinical psychology. Without the support of a scholarship, this wouldn’t have been possible for her. “It’s helped me stay on campus. It’s helped me pay for school, dorms, everything.” Visi t BethelUniversity.edu/Give for more information about how you can contribute toward student scholarships through the Bethel Fund.
