Advocacy Ministry Takes Alumnus to Rio Olympic Games
While the world has been watching the competition of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the last two weeks, alumnus Jonathan Goodson ’11 has been capturing a different side of the event. He’s working on a documentary about human trafficking for the organization A Voice for the Voiceless (a school and ministry affiliated with Youth With a Mission), headquartered in Kona, Hawaii. Because of press passes obtained for the games, he and his co-leader have had the opportunity to get an insider’s look at the competition – and what happens outside of events like this.
Bringing Biblical History to Life
On July 7, a piece of Biblical history came to life in Williamstown, Kentucky, that’s been seven years in the making. It’s a full-size Noah’s Ark, built to biblical specifications, spanning 510’ long, 85’ wide and 51’ high. This engineering marvel is the largest timber-frame structure in the world.
LeRoy S. Troyer, FAIA, founder, chair and president of The Troyer Group in Mishawaka, Ind. – and a member of Bethel’s Board of Trustees since 1977 – served as the architect for the project. Alumnus Kyle Silveus ’09, a civil engineer at The Troyer Group, served on the civil team.
Two D1 Players Find Home with Bethel Rugby
Bethel launched its inaugural season of rugby – one of the fastest growing college sports in the United States – in the fall of 2015, with a sold record of 4-2. Two of the team’s more seasoned rugby players Patrick Hafenbridle ’16 and Caleb Keas ’18 found their place on the pitch at the University of Kentucky before transferring to Bethel.
Building a Better Life Through Education
On Saturday, April 30, Yesenia Raygoza ’16 achieved a dream that’s been years in the making. The human services major walked in Bethel College’s adult and graduate studies commencement ceremony. After a summer internship, she will receive her bachelor’s degree – and she will have done so debt-free.
The single mom came to Bethel to make a better life for herself and her family. What she found here was real-life application in every class, caring faculty and a subject matter that she was passionate about.

Dismas House: Relationship and Reentry
Alumna Mary Pottenger ’15 serves as the Dismas Designs Project Manager at Dismas House of South Bend (named for the repentant thief at the cross). It’s a place where formerly incarcerated individuals and college students live at the same residence, where they can grow and learn together. As part of her job, Pottenger works to spread awareness about Dismas, while teaching jewelry-making workshops to the residents at the house.
Bethel Alumnus Comes Full Circle at Career Fair
Last year, Andrew Cary ’15 connected with Habitat for Humanity through the annual Bethel College Career and Internship Fair. This year, he stood on the other side of the table as one of 100 employers represented at the fair.
“In 12 months I’ve come full circle,” he says.
Alumnus Brings Purpose to Performance
Since 2011, alumnus Geoff King ’07 has combined his passion for sports with his adolescent studies and youth ministry degree by working for Athletes with Purpose, a Fort Wayne-based company, specializing in fitness training, that incorporates Christian values.
