At the age of 17, Ila Marie was saved at a Mennonite Brethren in Christ camp meeting in Franklin, Neb. $̃HU JUDGXDWLRQ VKH UHWXUQHG to Iowa and lived and worked in Glenwood, Iowa, during the war. $̃HU D VKRUW WHUP DV D PLVVLRQ ZRUNHU LQ &RXQFLO %OXƂV VKH decided to further her education and traveled to Mishawaka, Ind., with her brother, Lyman, his wife, Reba and baby boy Ron in a pickup, where she attended Bethel College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1952. $̃HU JUDGXDWLRQ VKH VSHQW years as a “home missionary,” caring for the sick and homebound members of her church. She was introduced by a mutual friend to a widower named Marvin Lee, and they ZHUH PDUULHG RQ $SULO Ila Marie then began a new career in elementary education, WHDFKLQJ ƃUVW DQG VHFRQG JUDGH in the South Bend, Ind., school district. She eventually also earned her Master of Science degree in Education at Indiana 8QLYHUVLW\ 6RXWK %HQG $̃HU 20 years of teaching, she joined Marvin in retirement and they traveled the country, visiting both coasts, the Grand Canyon, and Niagara Falls, while spending their winters in Avon Park, Fla. They found their retirement haven in Toledo, Ill., Marvin's hometown. Marvin preceded ,OD 0DULH LQ GHDWK LQ D̃HU which she relocated to Newton, Kan., to be near her niece, Alvera. Ila Marie spent the remainder of her years being cared for by WKH NLQG VWDƂ DW $VEXU\ 3DUN Paramount of Newton, where she died peacefully. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, and sisters. She is survived by numerous nephews, nieces, JUHDW QHSKHZV DQG QLHFHV DQG JUHDW JUHDW QHSKHZV DQG QLHFHV Anita Pearl Matteson (attended ’54-’55) , passed away March 2, 2023. The daughter of the late Leo and Julia Hoskins, VKH ZDV ERUQ )HE LQ Haxtun, Colo., and grew up in Yuma, Colo. She attended Bethel College and Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. At Bethel, she met David Matteson, from Brown City, Mich., who had come to prepare to be a pastor. They were married Aug. 9, 1958. $̃HU SDVWRULQJ LQ 0LFKLJDQ for three years, they moved to Mishawaka and then Granger. Dave worked for Bethel College DQG $QLWD ZDV D ƄRRU QXUVH DW Memorial Hospital. Eventually, Anita served as the secretary at Granger Missionary Church, the family's home church, where they both served for decades in many roles. In 1994 they moved toWhat Cheer, Iowa, then relocated once more in 2013, back to Mishawaka. Through all of life, with its many challenges and changes, Anita and Dave never wavered in their love for their Lord, for each other, and for her entire family. Anita is survived by her husband, son Stephen (Diane) Matteson, daughter Carol (Cal) Silveus, daughter Donna Moniot; brother Loren (Betty Gail) Hoskins; grandchildren, Stephanie (Andy) Abrams, Ryan (Marci) Matteson, Andrea Silveus, Stacy (Joshua) Schwartz, Jaci (Brett) Kuntz, Brad (McKenzie) Silveus, Bryce (Jessie) Matteson, Travis Silveus, Clay Moniot, Nate (Caroline) Silveus, and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother %HUZ\Q +RVNLQV DQG VRQ LQ ODZ Scott Moniot. Herbert D. Peer ’69, DJH RI Englewood, Ohio, passed away on Sept. 7, 2022. He retired from Miami Valley Career Technology Center, where he taught English and Social Studies for 45 years. Herb was a member of the Salem Church of God DQG VDQJ LQ WKH 6DOHP 4XDUWHW He enjoyed cookies, bicycling, traveling and HO scale model trains. Herb was also an avid Notre Dame fan. Winifred "Winnie"Marie Robinson ’56, age 88, of Edwardsburg, Mich., passed DZD\ )HE LQ (ONKDUW ,QG D̃HU DQ LOOQHVV She was born Aug. 18, 1934 in Elkton, Mich., the daughter of John "Jack" Nelson and Mary Evelyn (Thompson) Hazard, and has lived in the Michiana area for SOXV \HDUV $̃HU KLJK VFKRRO she received her degree from Bethel College in teaching. She taught in the South Bend and Edwardsburg school systems, as well as Lewis Cass Intermediate School in Cass County, Mich., where she worked with children with learning disabilities. Winnie was married Dec. 24, LQ 6RXWK %HQG WR 5LFKDUG Eugene Robinson and he passed May 28, 2001. Surviving are their daughters, a grandson, and four siblings. Family who preceded her in passing are her parents, her beloved husband, Richard, and a sister, Helen Bassett. Hyla Ross ’54, age 90, of Waterford, Mich., passed away on Dec. 11, 2022. Loving sister of Vonda Snell and predeceased by Phillip Ross, Clairmont Ross and Geneva Ross; daughter of the late Jesse and Flossie Ross; dear aunt of John Teal, Diane Moore, Edward Ross, Christine Ross, Richard Ross and Margaret Rizzutti. Hyla served the Lord as a missionary. She was a ORQJ WLPH PHPEHU RI WKH )LUVW Missionary Church and was very involved with Child Evangelism Fellowship. 25 SPRING 2023
