Cheryl Lynn Gillette, ’09

,

age 54, passed away Sat., April

1, 2017, in South Bend, Ind. She

graduated with a bachelor’s in

Organizational Management

from Bethel College.

Those left to cherish her

memory are her mother,

Dorothy Brady (Arnell); father,

Charles Scales (Barabara);

daughters, Rudi Holmes and

LaDarrien Gillette; grandson,

Kamren Holmes; brother, Allan

Gillette (Latha); niece, Tanika

Benjamin-Lopez (Alfredo);

nephew, Allan Gillette Jr.; sister,

Angela Flack (Arnold); brother,

Carey Goins; sister, Tracey

Saunders; sister, Monique

McCray; sister, Yolanda Poston

(Paul); sister, Tonya Robertson

(Reginald) and a host of great-

nieces, nephews, cousins and

friends.

Ruth I. (Copley) Hostetler

’71

, age 68, of Indianapolis,

went to be with Jesus May 18,

2017, after a two-year battle

with cancer.

On July 1, 1972, Ruth married

Roger L. Hostetler, who

survives along with her sons,

Jason S (Emily) and Matthew

T ’01 (Michelle), sister, Jo Ann

C ’62 (James ’63) Hossler,

brothers, James C (Shirley)

Copley, Paul W (Cindy)

Copley, and a host of family

and friends.

Ruth graduated from Bethel

College with a Bachelor of

Arts in Elementary Education

and then earned her Master

of Arts from Butler University

in 1997 in Marriage and

Family Counseling. She

taught in the Triton Central

school system in the

Indianapolis area for 34 years

and then was a Marriage

and Family Counselor for 15

years at Southside Pastoral

Counseling in Indianapolis.

Doris (Hansen) Smith

attended ’47-’50

, age 87,

passed away on July 11, 2017.

Originally from South Dakota,

she married Norm Smith of

Elkhart, Ind. Her sister, Melva,

also attended Bethel College.

A memorial service was held

at Cool Spring Baptist Church,

Mechanicsville, Va.

Kenneth C. Kinghorn

(attended ’57-’58)

, age 87,

passed away July 23, 2017.

He received a B.A. in music

education and composition

from Ball State University,

working his way through

college as a woodwind expert.

For five years, he directed

music programs in South

Bend, his high school band

receiving a number of honors.

He left the music field in 1958

to pursue graduate work in

historical theology, receiving

an M.Div. from Asbury

Theological Seminary and a

Ph.D. from Emory University.

He joined the faculty at

Asbury Theological Seminary

in 1965 and taught for 50

years.

He also authored hundreds

of articles and over 25 books,

including

The Heritage of

American Methodism

and

The

Story of Asbury Theological

Seminary

.

Norma Jean (Byers) Marks

’49

, age 89, passed away on

Aug. 11, 2017. She was called to

a life of ministry and service

and chose to attend Ft. Wayne

Bible College in Ft. Wayne, Ind,

and later transferred to Bethel.

She married Glenn Marks, an

ordained minister in the United

Missionary Church. Norma Jean

is survived by her husband of

67 years, Glenn, her brother

Donald W. (Mamie) Byers, her

sister Laura Lee (Ben) Hauser;

four children and spouses,

Jeanette and David Oliphant,

Marlene and Lars Sjoholm,

Thomas and Rebecca (Allen)

Marks, and Cynthia and Stanley

Gerig; 14 grandchildren and

eight great-grandchildren. She

was preceded in death by her

parents, Donald and Mae Byers,

and a daughter, Dorothy Mae.

Professor Emeritus Don Conrad ’50, age 89, of

Elkhart, passed away on May 22, 2017.

Don served in the United States Navy before

enrolling at Bethel College in 1947. He was

the first graduate to take all of his credits at

the school. He graduated in 1950 Cum Laude,

completing his bachelor’s degree in only three

years. In August of 1950, Don married Ruth

D’Arcy. She preceded him in death on Jan. 4,

2004. Don earned his master’s degree from

Michigan State and his Ph.D. from the University of

Notre Dame. He also taught at Asbury Seminary and

Purdue North Central.

Don pastored in the Missionary Church

from 1950-1962 and was ordained in 1955. In

1962, he began teaching at Bethel College.

Over the span of 35 years, Don served as

Sociology Division Chair, Registrar, Director of

Admissions, and Director of Adult Programs.

He attained full professor status and retired

Professor Emeritus.

Don is survived by his children, Greg (Kathie)

Conrad, Joel (Mona) Conrad, Christine

(Guy) Fisher, and Loren (Alecia) Conrad; 11

grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and

two brothers, Jim Conrad and Tom Conrad. He

was preceded in death by his parents; his wife,

Ruth; his grandson, Kyle Conrad; three sisters,

Donna, Eileen, and Beverly; and a brother,

Rocky.
