BethelCollege.edu/MagazineIn this magazine, the globe is Bethel’s playground. An audacious
claim, I know, for a small college in northern Indiana. But to campus
visitors we say, proof is in the pudding. Alumni get there from here.
One alumnus produces photo essays to humanize immigration policy
along the U.S.-Mexico border. Another opens a school in Romania to
reach children for Christ. Still another trains international athletes in
mental performance – at the professional level!
It’s no accident so many alumni are scattered throughout the
world; it’s in Bethel’s very DNA. In fact, this year, our campus has
130 students born outside the U.S., from more than 40 countries.
And our students are encouraged to enlarge their vision by taking
advantage of study abroad opportunities. Sign language interpreting
senior Stephanie Norden has a global vision to serve the deaf community in Israel, and next
year, through the support of an anonymous donor, she’ll travel there for the May 2018 Friends
of Bethel Israel Tour. Sitting with her will be other alumni from Hawaii,
Atlanta and beyond. Join us in Israel:
BethelCollege.edu/IsraelTour .In appreciation of Bethel’s reach, we commissioned Hall of Fame artist
Gary Varvel – whose work appears in the Wall Street Journal, USA
Today, and Sports Illustrated – to depict the diaspora (pictured at right).
But how? How does such a giant thing come from our small package?
During my opening Chapel message this fall, I introduced students to
a lovely French word: terroir. It refers specifically to regionalized soil
characteristics that imbue a crop with unique flavor. General use of the
term connotes one’s sense of place, their accent or style.
Bethel’s culture, our terroir, is intentional. We are not value-free. Our ambition begins with
knowledge called course credits, but moves beyond to shape desire. Yes, you read that right.
We work to form a new desire in graduates. Our Godward challenge: get swept up in God’s
grand vision to restore the world, to solve its problems through every imaginable profession, in
every imaginable place.
That is our terroir. So, the world becomes our territory.
